Global Hand Washing Day

Global Hand-washing Day

Global Hand Washing Day takes place on October 15 of each year. This campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of handwashing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.

The campaign was initiated to reduce mortality rates related to diarrhea diseases by introducing simple behavioral changes, such as hand washing with soap, which according to research can reduce the rate by almost 50 per cent.

Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Queen Mary, University of London took nearly 400 samples from mobile phones and hands in 12 British cities.
Their results show that

16% of phones and 16% of hands harboured E. coli (Escherichia coli), bacteria which inhabit the human intestines.
The largest proportion of contaminated phones was in Birmingham (41%) while Londoners were caught with the highest proportion of E. coli present on hands (28%).

This show that either they are not washing their hands properly or they are not washing them at all.

Five Facts Everyone Should Know about Hand washing with Soap

Washing hands with water alone is not enough!

Washing with soap can prevent diseases that kill millions
    of children every year.

The critical moments for hand washing with soap are after
using the toilet or cleaning a child and before handling food.

Hand washing with soap is the single most cost-effective
    health intervention.

Children can be agents of change.

Thanks to Global Handwashing Day.

Steve Jobs, 1955 – 2011

Steve Jobs

Steven Paul Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple, passed away last night only a month after he stepped down as CEO. He was suffering from advanced pancreatic cancer, and in 2004 had an operation related to the disease. He also had a liver transplant in 2009 during one of those medical leaves. World have lost one of the greatest technological innovators of our time.

The statement from Jobs’ family:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.
In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.
We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

The release from Apple:

Statement by Apple’s Board of Directors
CUPERTINO, Calif. — We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.
Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.
His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Tim Cook’s (Current CEO of Apple) email to Apple employees:

Team,
I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing
human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.
No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.
Tim

Statement from President Obama

Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.
By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity.
By making computers personal and putting the Internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.
The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen

It was an honor to have worked with Steve Jobs. He will forever remain an inspiration. He will be sorely missed, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin:

From the earliest days of Google, whenever Larry and I sought inspiration for vision and leadership, we needed to look no farther than Cupertino. Steve, your passion for excellence is felt by anyone who has ever touched an Apple product (including the macbook I am writing this on right now). And I have witnessed it in person the few times we have met.
On behalf of all of us at Google and more broadly in technology, you will be missed very much. My condolences to family, friends, and colleagues at Apple.

Google co-founder Larry Page

I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google’s are with his family and the whole Apple family.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates:

I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work. Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

From Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page:

Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.

End of Google Labs

Today Google announced the closure of Google Labs. It is a sad news to the consumers of attractive applications launched through Google Labs.

Google announced the news on its official blog, stating,

“We’re prioritizing our product efforts. As part of that process, we’ve decided to wind down Google Labs. While we’ve learned a huge amount by launching very early prototypes in Labs, we believe that greater focus is crucial if we’re to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities ahead.”

In an update later on they announced,

“We don’t have any plans to change in-product experimentation channels like Gmail Labs or Maps Labs. We’ll continue to experiment with new features in each of our products.”

It seems that the company is trying to save revenue from R&D and will invest this in the areas which can generate more income. Last year, the company spent $3.7 billion on R&D, compared to $29.3 billion in operating revenue i.e. 12.6 percent investment in R&D. For the same period, Oracle spent $4.5 billion on R&D and their revenue was $35.6 billion, a 12.6 percent investment; Microsoft spent $8.7 billion on R&D for taking in $62.5 billion, a 13.9 percent investment; IBM spent $6.0 billion on R&D against $99.9 billion in revenue, meaning it put just 6 percent of operating revenue into R&D; HP collected $126 billion while spending $3 billion on research and development (2.4 percent), and Apple spent $1.8 billion, compared to its  revenue of $65.2 billion. That is is about 2.8 percent.

Lunar Eclipse 15 June 2011

Astronomers in parts of Europe, Africa, Central Asia and Australia are hoping for clear skies on Wednesday to enjoy a total lunar eclipse, the first of 2011 and the longest in nearly 11 years.

The terrestrial shadow starts to fall at 1724 GMT and lifts at 2300 GMT, although “totality” — when the lunar face is completely covered — runs from 1922 to 2102 GMT, according to NASA’s veteran eclipse-watcher, Fred Espenak.

The 100-minute period of totality is the longest since July 2000.

The Moon is a cold, rocky body about 2,160 miles (3,476 km) in diameter. It has no light of its own but shines by sunlight reflected from its surface. The Moon orbits Earth about once every 29 and a half days. As it circles our planet, the changing position of the Moon with respect to the Sun causes our natural satellite to cycle through a series of phases:

New Moon > New Crescent > First Quarter > Waxing Gibbous> Full Moon > Waning Gibbous > Last Quarter > Old Crescent > New Moon (again)

Types of Lunar Eclipses
An eclipse of the Moon (or lunar eclipse) can only occur at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth’s shadow. That shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped components, one nested inside the other. The outer or penumbral shadow is a zone where the Earth blocks part but not all of the Sun’s rays from reaching the Moon. In contrast, the inner or umbral shadow is a region where the Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
Astronomers recognize three basic types of lunar eclipses:

1. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

  • The Moon passes through Earth’s penumbral shadow.
  • These events are of only academic interest because they are subtle and hard to observe.

2. Partial Lunar Eclipse

  • A portion of the Moon passes through Earth’s umbral shadow.
  • These events are easy to see, even with the unaided eye.

3. Total Lunar Eclipse

  • The entire Moon passes through Earth’s umbral shadow.
  • These events are quite striking due to the Moon’s vibrant red color during the total phase (totality).

World Blood Donor Day

14 June is celebrated as the day to recognize the millions of people who save lives and improve the health of others by donating blood. The Day highlights the need to regularly give blood to prevent shortages in hospitals and clinics, particularly in developing countries where quantities are very limited. Out of the 80 countries with low blood donation rates (fewer than 10 donations per thousand people), 79 are developing nations.

The theme for World Blood Donor Day 2011 is, “More blood. More life.” This theme reinforces the urgent need for more people all over the world to become life-savers by volunteering to donate blood regularly.
